TV ad satires on India

A great, must-see ad parodying Bollywood. It made the shortlist for an advertising film award, the Cannes Lion, this year. 'A film about love, peacocks, and cold, frothy lager...' It's 'Mulit,' part II!

Tennent's Lager 2003 'Jabhi Khushi Tabhi Tennent's' Bollywood spoof TV Advertisement."Jabhi Khushi Tabhi Tennent's" (8.9 MB)

Ad for Tennent's, a UK beer. A 'Mulit' derivative. Boy meets girl, complications, climax (so to speak) and denouement in sixty neat seconds. Catchy music. Rajasthan. Pigeons. No elephants.

Background

"Guru"
Carling Black Label beer. Guru. Levitating barmaid. A bit sacrilegious.

"Elephant Tower"
Pepsi ad, slick. Won a Clio and a Cannes Bronze Lion. More elephants (I'm sensing a theme here). A hippo. Dir: Tarsem Singh ('The Cell'). BBDO.

"Carwash"
Cobra beer. Jaipur, Rajasthan. Elephants. No words are exchanged, but the Indian head shake speaks volumes! Indigenous, ingenious, but awful, stereotypical voiceover.

"Haircut"
Hot girlfriend. Jaipur, Rajasthan. Elephants. At the end, the guy with the haircut bobs his head to the music—look closely, I think it's the guy from the Peugeot ad! Sly, very sly.

"The making of the Cobra ads"
Sexy club scenes and a slightly toady CEO. Saatchi & Saatchi, dir: Shamin Desai.

"Long live India. It’s time they acknowledged that we are better."

I hope you've seen these by now:

"Mulit"
Brilliant, seminal Absolut vodka campaign. Bollywood film parody.

"The Sculptor"
Peugeot 206 car ad. Ambassador car turned into Peugeot. Elephant. Demolition derby. Head bobbing. You can download the song from Kazaa, it's 'The Sculptor' by Raja Mushtaq.
